Decades of strife and conflict in Afghanistan, on top of its historic poverty, has resulted in vast unmet development & infrastructure related needs and deprivation of basic human rights in Afghanistan. Due to social and injustice, women and children are the most vulnerable to the consequences of the poor social and development services, particularly in education, healthcare, WASH, shelter, protection, among others.
Muslim Hands International (MHI) started its working in Afghanistan in 2005 at a period of peak humanitarian needs. Since then, MH has been working diligently from its country office in Kabul carrying out relief and development activities across 21 different provinces, with a staff of several hundred (including 25 permanent employees in kabul office). Its work in Afghanistan has focused on improving the lives of poor and vulnerable communities on the basis of needs, (regardless of religion, gender, ethnicity or any other factor), through provision of tailor-made services and products around following sectors
- Education,
- Health,
- WASH,
- Protection,
- Livelihoods, small scale ,entrepreneurship and income generation,
- Agriculture and subsistence farming
- and other specialized projects (e.g. rehabilitation of disabled persons, orphan sponsorship scheme, income generation activities and emergency aid/relief activities)
Besides these sectors Muslim Hands uses its knowledge of the unmet needs across several areas and regions to help UN agencies, NGO forum and government ministries for effective prioritization. We are considered as an important advocate of marginalized communities at Kabul.
Provision of Health Services;
MHI provision of medical care and addressing broader health issues in Afghanistan are as follows;
Maternity Clinic: MHI has built and fully supports (with professional staff, equipment and medicines) a small maternity unit in the Pol-e-Charki, Kabul. This clinic is among the only sources of pre-natal and post-natal care for a wide area on the rural outskirts of Kabul and fills a gap in gynecological support available to mothers.
Clinic: MHI is running a static clinic in Jalalabad city of Nangarhar province to serve poor and needy people. The clinic supports the obstetrics and gynecology department of the local hospital. This project has been on-going for a number of years and it has served an estimated total of 45,000 beneficiaries. The aforementioned clinics are fully supplied and supported by Muslim Hands including but not limited to the following;
a) Free medicines
b) Free Oxygen
c) Free medical service

- Assistance to disabled people by providing wheelchairs.
WASH
Access to sufficient quantity and quality of clean drinking water is a major problem in Afghanistan. Not only is water scarce but in many cases it is also unclean and carries germs that result into water-borne diseases.
Therefore, Muslim Hands Afghanistan has dug wells complete with fabrication & installation of concrete rings / slabs for lining the well which protect wells from external pollutants. MHI also been installing long lasting durable hand pumps which benefit thousands in rural communities, and assist in increasing health standards among the general population. MHI has successfully installed 1000s of such water wells in different areas of Kabul, Parwan, Ghazni, Gardez, Kandahar, Jalalabad, Zabul, and northern areas.
Orphan Sponsorship Scheme
Muslim Hands’ One-to-One Orphan Sponsorship Scheme is by far one of the most locally recognized and appreciated ways of helping the most vulnerable population of Afghanistan. The Orphan Sponsorship Scheme is designed to assist orphans who have been matched with adoptive families (such as relatives or households nominated and entrusted by the community) and also to support the adoptive families in ensuring the well-being of the child. A portion of sponsorship money goes to the orphan and their guardians to help towards living expenses and enabling a child to receive an education, so that they are empowered to build for themselves a brighter future.
Muslim Hands International donors are currently supporting over 6,200 orphans in 21 of the world’s poorest countries. In Afghanistan there are 433 sponsored students who are getting AFs 2160 / $44- per month. The sponsorship money is spent on child’s education including School fees, clothing & footwear (including school uniform), books & stationery, travel costs, and meals.
Livelihood Support through Agriculture Inputs

MHI project is gender balanced and focuses on helping widows who have no formal source of income. The types of activities conducted under income generation projects includes the following;
